Part of Web analytics for marketers: the parts worth your attention
Nine web analytics patterns for marketers and the tools that record them
Nine web analytics patterns for marketers, from landing pages and lead forms to subscriptions and local search, with the web signal, the outcome and the tools that record each one.
What to take away
- Each pattern needs its own outcome, denominator and maturity window.
- Acquisition reports follow each product's own source rules.
- User metrics should not be presented as verified counts of people.
Web analytics for marketers examples are most useful as decision patterns. The nine cases below show different evidence needs, so they should not be merged into one conversion dashboard.
| Case | Web signal | Business outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Landing page | Eligible sessions and task start | Mature lead or order |
| Content | Qualified reading and next action | Assisted pipeline or subscription |
| Lead form | Field error and server acceptance | Qualified opportunity |
| Ecommerce | Product, checkout, payment states | Paid net order |
| Subscription | Trial and activation sequence | Retained account |
| Support | Search, article, escalation | Resolved issue without repeat |
| Local search | Location-page and call actions | Verified appointment or visit |
| Launch | Feature discovery and use | Sustained adoption |
| B2B account | Known and anonymous site activity | Mature account outcome |
Name the tools that record each pattern
A tool name is not a method. For each row, write down which report or event the figure comes from, and which business outcome it is measured against.
- Landing pages and content:GA4 first user source and session source reports, Adobe Analytics marketing channels, Matomo referrer reports, and Plausible or Fathom referrer reports.
- Tag and reporting layers:Google Tag Manager and Tealium collect the events. Looker Studio and Tableau show them.
- Lead forms:HubSpot forms, Salesforce Web-to-Lead and Marketo forms. Google reCAPTCHA is a common spam control on the form.
- Ecommerce and subscriptions:Shopify and WooCommerce for orders, Stripe and PayPal for payment states, Stripe Billing, Chargebee and Recurly for subscription states, and Klaviyo for trial and activation messages.
- Support:Zendesk, Intercom and Freshdesk, for search, article views and escalations.
- Local search:CallRail, Yext and BrightLocal, for location page and call actions.
- Launches:Optimizely, LaunchDarkly and Amplitude, for feature discovery and use.
- B2B accounts:Salesforce, HubSpot and Marketo, for known and anonymous site activity tied to accounts.
Ad platforms set their own default click and view windows, and their default attribution models differ. Google Ads may use data-driven attribution, and Meta Ads has its own default windows. Read the setting in each platform before comparing results across them. Measuring web analytics for marketers covers how each row is counted.
Google describes its user acquisition report as showing how new users first found a website or app under GA4 rules. That scope differs from session acquisition, and neither one establishes an incremental channel effect.
Choose the right user measure
Google's guide to GA4 user metrics explains total, active and new users in that product. These are reporting constructs shaped by identity and activity rules. They are not a census of people.
Define each user measure
- Write the eligible population
- Define web signal and failure states
- Name the authoritative business outcome
- Set attribution and causal limits
- Record privacy and suppression rules
- Review the decision after maturity
Write a decision sentence for each case
Write one decision sentence beside each example. The sentence names who acts, which evidence matters, and which signal stops the action. For example, a lead-form team might pause a field change if qualified opportunities fall after the maturity window, while a support team might revise an article if repeat contacts rise.
Illustrative worked example: a landing page gets 1,000 eligible sessions in a month, 120 form starts and 30 submitted forms. The start rate is 12 percent of sessions, and the submit rate is 25 percent of starts. The decision should rest on qualified leads after the maturity window, not on submissions alone.
Treat every example as a bounded pattern. Record its audience, source data, identity rule, business constraint, decision and outcome window. Replace the example figures with local inputs and test a failure case. If an example depends on rights, staff or product functions the team lacks, label it unsuitable rather than copying its visible report.
Read support and B2B patterns with care
For support, a lower article-to-escalation rate may reflect successful self-service, or people giving up. Add resolution confirmation, repeat contact and satisfaction evidence before declaring an improvement. For B2B, keep person-level and account-level interpretation separate, as the customer analytics article explains.
Reading a before-and-after change as proof is a common web analytics for marketers mistake. Use an experiment when a change to a page, message or flow has to be shown to cause an impact. Monitor guardrails throughout: errors, accessibility, refunds, complaints and service load.
Check the record and the wording
The NIST Privacy Framework starting guide describes a process for identifying and managing privacy risk. Use it to assign owners, describe data processing and record responses. The framework is voluntary and does not establish legal compliance.
The W3C information and relationships guidance describes how visual structure and relationships should be available to software as well as people. Apply that test to the tables, controls and summaries in each example. Passing one criterion does not establish full accessibility, so test the output with the users and technology in scope.
Keep the evidence record beside the decision so a reviewer can reproduce the reasoning. The common web analytics for marketers questions article answers what teams usually ask when they adapt one of these patterns.
